The Dubai police have arrested Atul and Rajesh Gupta wanted by South African authorities for criminal and money laundering charges.
Dubai police made the arrest after receiving a red notice for the Gupta brothers by Interpol. The force has also coordinated with the authorities in South Africa regarding the extradition file to complete the legal procedures.
Police in Dubai said in a statement that the arrest reflects the continuous efforts of the United Arab Emirates in combating money laundering crimes through local cooperation the competent authorities in South Africa, including the Ministry of Justice, the Dubai Public Prosecution, the Executive Office to Combat Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing, and the Financial Intelligence Unit.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has noted confirmation of the arrests of the two Gupta brothers in the UAE, stating that extradition is a complex process involving many role players, including the Executive.
The NPA has said it has an experienced team of internal and external experts who are working closely with law enforcement and its partners in the criminal justice system on the matter.
